Founded in the early days of Earth’s colonization wave, Ritulia (later named First World) was settled by a cult-like order that worshipped normalization and considered distinctiveness abhorrent. Citizens had numbers, not names; there were standard uniforms and haircuts; jobs were assigned according to computer-analyzed needs without factoring inborn talents or aptitudes. Individuality was crushed at every opportunity. Citizen #3348756938 soon realized he was different – despite all the programming, he couldn’t bring himself to function like that. He pretended to follow the herd, but found ways to cultivate his “differences” secretly. He would often gaze at the stars in hope that one day he could travel between them. One day, when he was 16, 3348756938 was traveling to Fifth City and his automated car crashed. Disoriented, he wandered into the woods and witnessed an alien probe falling from the sky. Investigating it, he was bathed by the probe’s last burst of energy, which transformed him physically and made his greatest dream come true. Starling, as he called himself, left Ritulia to promote freedom and difference and never looked back.
