Na minha newsletter, DisPatches (já assinou?), já falei de como Roger Zelazny é uma inspiração e de como o Neil Gaiman já me deu um fora. Que o criador de Sandman era amigo do autor das Crônicas de Amber eu sabia, mas não tinha ideia que uma obra deste tinha sido essencial para o sucesso daquele – ainda por cima, uma que eu gosto também.
A descoberta veio graças a uma entrevista do The Guardian com o Gaiman:
Gaiman precisava de outra maneira para começar, e ela veio por meio de um escritor de ficção científica norte-americano. “Roger Zelazny escreveu um livro chamado Lord of Light, onde ele criou deuses de ficção científica que pareciam super-heróis,” diz Gaiman. “A história se passa em um mundo no futuro onde exploradores espaciais se deram os poderes do panteão hindu. Pensei: não consigo escrever super-heróis, mas conseguiria escrever quadrinhos sobre deuses. Aposto que conseguiria fazer isso, e seria parecido o bastante com um quadrinho de super-herói para enganar as pessoas.”
Pois é, grandes mentes pensam da mesma maneira.
In my newsletter, DisPatches (have you subscribed yet?), I’ve mentioned how Roger Zelazny is an inspiration and how Neil Gaiman once told me off. I knew the creator of Sandman was friends with the author of the Chronicles of Amber, but I had no idea one of the latter’s works was essential for the success of the former – plus, one I also like.
The discovery came thanks to this The Guardian‘s interview with Gaiman:
Gaiman needed another way in, and it came via a US science-fiction author. “Roger Zelazny did a book called Lord of Light, where he did science-fictional gods who feel like superheroes,” says Gaiman. “It’s set in a world in the future where a bunch of space explorers have given themselves the powers of the Hindu pantheon. I thought: I can’t do superheroes, but I could do god comics. I bet I could get that kind of feeling to happen, and it might feel enough like a superhero comic to fool people.”
Yeah, great minds think alike.

Back at the end of 2020, I had a short story – “O fogo da vingança”[The fire of vengeance] – accepted for the sixth volume of the Multiverso Pulp anthology series here in Brazil.
It’s going to be published in 2023. This is the art for the cover, by Brazilian artist Fred Macêdo.

Meu conto “Monstros” foi um dos três selecionados no edital Poder Cabano, da revista Potocando. Duplamente feliz, porque, apesar de ser do Sudeste, consegui emplacar uma história em um edital organizado por uma equipe do Norte, sobre um ambientação nortista, e no qual os outros dois selecionados, Bia Chaves e Raphael Carmesin, são paraenses.
My short story “Monstros” [Monsters] was one of the three selected in Potocando magazine’s Poder Cabano call. I’m doubly happy, because, despite being from the Southeast, I’ve landed a story in a call organized by a team from the North, about a Northern setting, and in which the other two authors selected, Bia Chaves and Raphael Carmesin, are from Pará.
