Magia e mutação

Para a coluna comemorativa de número 150 da Superseeds, pedi sugestões de temas para os meus apoiadores e recebi: “mutações criam magos” e “o mundo do outro lado da sua porta quando os M-genes começam a se manifestar (com sua expressão baseada em arquétipos locais)”. Como sou biólogo e trabalhei com genética bacteriana, essas sugestões até que não foram difíceis de usar.

Só que aí enfiei o pé na jaca. Falei de alelos múltiplos, seleção natural, deriva genética, zigosidade e dominância incompleta. Achei que podia ter ficado confuso para os leitores que só possuem a base escolar de biologia. Por isso, modifiquei uma imagem de domínio público dos Institutos Nacionais de Saúde, dos Estados Unidos, para deixar tudo mais claro.

Ela mostra as possíveis configurações do gene MAGE para os filhos de um casal de magers (o termo pra pessoas com essa mutação) heterozigotos, que possuem um alelo mutante (M-factor) e um selvagem.

Eu sabia que aqueles 15 anos de biologia iam servir pra alguma coisa.

pedi sugestões de temas para os meus apoiadores For the commemorative 150th column of Superseeds, I asked for theme suggestions and got: “mutations create mages” and “world outside your door when M-genes begin to manifest (with expression based off local archetypes)”. Since I have a biology degree and did research on bacterial genetics, these suggestions were actually not that hard to work with.

But then I went all in. I mentioned multiple alleles, natural selection, genetic drift, zigosity and incomplete dominance. I thought that might be confusing for readers that only have high-school biology. So, I modified a National Institutes of Health graphic to make it clearer.

It shows the possible MAGE configurations for the offspring of two heterozygous magers (the term for those with this mutation), who have a mutant allele (M-factor) and a wild-type one.

I knew those 15 years of biology would be useful for something.
